Instructions for Bag Design

Using the information they have gained from their experiences students are to design a Bag using appropriate materials to suit the needs of a chosen scenario. This could be for a waterproof library bag, shopping bag, gym/swimming bag, or work tool bag.(Critical and creative thinking). Depending on the students ability and scaffolding required teachers may want to provide the students with a design brief. Students will need to take digital photographs of the various stages of their design to upload to their e journals to complete their instruction manuals.

Context

The term ‘material’ refers to what objects are made of, such as plastic, rubber, glass or paper. The properties of an object depend on what materials are used to make it. For example, a raincoat made from plastic (material) is strong and waterproof (properties of plastic). Some properties of the object, however, do not depend on the materials chosen, such as the style and size of a raincoat.
Different materials have different properties and are therefore suitable for use in different objects. For example, stockings require a material with some elasticity to allow them to change shape when a force is applied, and recover their original shape when the force is removed. Winter coats need materials that are good thermal insulators, for example, wool, to keep the wearer’s warmth close to their body. Gardening boots need to be made of a material that is supple and waterproof, for example, rubber.

Challenge Statement

Students are to design and build a bag to suit a scenario of their choice using materials appropriate for the conditions. Students will be required to justify their choices of materials.

Parameters

  • The design must include some elements of sustainability (Sustainability)

  • The bag must not be larger than 40 cm squared

  • The structure must be able to support itself

Evaluation

  • Appropriate use of materials for chosen scenario

  • Innovation of design

  • Number of sustainable materials used in their designs

  • The inclusion of renewable energy and recycling  features in the design
